Proposal to Nominate Theo Fleury for Induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame

To the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee,

We are writing to formally nominate Theoren Fleury for induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.  Fleury’s impact on the sport of hockey, his contributions to the broader community, and his tireless advocacy for mental health and First Nations issues make him a worthy candidate for this honour.

Hockey Achievements
Theo Fleury’s hockey career is a testament to resilience, determination, and exceptional skill.  Even at a height of 5’6”, he became one of the most dynamic and fearless players in NHL history.  Key highlights of his hockey accomplishments include:

• Stanley Cup Champion (1989): As a member of the Calgary Flames, Fleury played a pivotal role in capturing the franchise’s first and only Stanley Cup.
• Olympic Gold Medalist (2002): Representing Canada, Fleury contributed to his country’s victory in Salt Lake City, helping end a 50-year drought for Olympic gold in men’s hockey.

• NHL Career Statistics: Over a 15-season NHL career, Fleury played 1,084 games, scoring 455 goals and 633 assists for 1,088 points. These achievements place him among the elite players of his era and 69th in NHL history.

• Seven-Time NHL All-Star: Fleury’s consistent excellence earned him a spot at the All-Star Game multiple times.

What sets Fleury apart is not just his on-ice performance but his perseverance in overcoming adversity, including being a late draft pick (8th round, 166th overall) and proving doubters wrong with his relentless work ethic. He was loved and respected by many hockey fans including a young generation of hockey players that used his story as part of their dream to become an
NHL hockey player no matter their size or background. He demonstrated that it took more than height to play the game, and this paved the way for many small statured players to enhance their skills and ultimately become NHL players.

Advocacy for Mental Health
In addition to his hockey legacy, Theo Fleury is a trailblazer in mental health advocacy. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, he has courageously shared his story through his best-selling book Playing with Fire and countless public speaking engagements. His openness has inspired others to confront trauma, seek help, and break the silence surrounding abuse and
mental health struggles. Fleury’s efforts have helped to destigmatize mental health issues, particularly within the hockey community.

Support for the First Nations Community

As a proud Métis man, Fleury has been a strong advocate for Indigenous Rights and Addiction Supports. He has worked to raise awareness about the challenges faced by First Nations communities, including intergenerational trauma and the need for healing. His initiatives, such as hockey camps and community events, have empowered Indigenous youth, fostering a sense of pride and belonging while promoting the values of sport and teamwork.

Legacy Beyond the Ice
Fleury’s legacy extends far beyond hockey. He has used his platform to create meaningful change, embodying the principles of leadership, courage, and resilience. His dedication to helping others and improving lives reflects the values that the Hockey Hall of Fame seeks to celebrate and honour.

Theo Fleury’s contributions to the sport, his advocacy for mental health, and his support for the First Nations community should be recognized. We would like the committee to consider not only his incredible accomplishments as a player but also his lasting impact on society.  Please consider him for the prestigious award to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Sincerely,

Theo Fleury Hockey Fans
